Stadt im Cyberspace

Decatur ist eine Stadt im DeKalb County, im US-Bundesstaat Georgia. Die Stadt hat sich ein Modellprojekt vorgenommen, das zweifellos zukunftsweisend ist – allerdings ist es seiner Zeit noch etwas voraus. Mit Hilfe der NASA wird die Stadt im Cyberspace nachgebaut. Nach eigenen Angaben verfolgt man damit folgenden Zweck: “The City of Decatur is currently evaluating the use of virtual environment technology to encourage community networking, improve civic engagement, and promote economic development in the city. Immersive virtual environments, initially popularized by games such as World of Warcraft© and social networking sites such as Second Life©, are gaining popularity for use as educational and training tools.”

Während man hierzulande noch über spritsparende Fortbewegung nachdenkt geht Decatur schon einen Schritt weiter und macht urbane Fortbewegung gänzlich überflüssig.
